Study Reveals Disparities in Post-Blood Test Colorectal Cancer Follow-Ups

Investigation Highlights Gaps in Colorectal Cancer Follow-Up Care

A recent investigation led by UCLA highlights a significant gap in follow-up care for colorectal cancer screening. The study found that only a portion of patients with abnormal blood test results proceed to schedule and complete a subsequent colonoscopy.

Follow-Up Rates and Trends

Specifically, just 49% of participants underwent a follow-up colonoscopy within six months, and only 56% did so at any point during the two-year research period. Similar trends were observed among individuals who used stool tests for screening. Factors such as having private insurance and experiencing fewer health issues increased the likelihood of patients completing follow-up procedures.

Implications and Recommendations

The researchers stress the critical need for timely colonoscopies following abnormal blood test results to ensure early detection and treatment. The full study appears in the journal Gastroenterology.
