Sudan Reports Over 80 Cholera-Related Deaths and More Than 2,100 Cases Amid Ongoing Crisis
According to UNICEF, since June 21, the region of Tawila in North Darfur alone has experienced 20 fatalities and 1,180 new cholera infections. Overall, the five Darfur states have reported nearly 2,140 cases and at least 80 deaths as of July 30. UNICEF has issued a grave warning that over 640,000 children in North Darfur are at increased risk due to violence, hunger, and the cholera outbreak.
Sheldon Yett, UNICEF's representative in Sudan, highlighted the severity of the outbreak, stating, "Cholera, though preventable and treatable, continues to devastate Tawila and other parts of Darfur, endangering the lives of children, especially the most vulnerable and youngest."
Efforts to contain the disease are ongoing; however, persistent violence hampers aid delivery. Yett emphasized the need for "safe, unrestricted access to provide urgent assistance to these children, who cannot afford to wait any longer."
