Suicide Prevention Walk held in Clayton Sunday

CLAYTON, New York (WWNY) - Each September for over twenty years, Jefferson County residents put on their walking shoes for a message just as important then as it is now: suicide prevention.

Held in Clayton Sunday, the Jefferson County Suicide Prevention Coalition put on it’s latest Suicide Prevention Walk.

The event is not only a resource hub for suicide prevention assistance in the county, with several organizations in attendance providing in-person help and resource materials, but it’s also a fundraiser.

All of the money made during the walk goes back to county Suicide Prevention Coalition programs meant to aid those struggling.

One walker, Janell Matthews, is walking in memory of her son, Russell, who she lost last November.

“I think the North Country really needs this,” said Matthews. “My son lived in Watertown and then committed suicide. He went to a lot of different resources. I don’t know if he knew all the different mental health things that were available. I know he tried hard.”
