Summer Exhibitions at the Michael C. Carlos Museum
The Michael C. Carlos Museum is hosting a series of summer exhibitions featuring diverse cultural artworks. In celebration of Diwali 2024, a prominent photograph of Maa Laxmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity, is displayed in the Asian Art section. This large-scale piece by Manjari Sharma, acquired this year in honor of the 2023 Woolford B. Baker Service Award recipient Ellen Gough, complements her depiction of Lord Vishnu. Both works are part of Sharma's Darshan series, which explores the spiritual connection between deities and devotees.
Manjari Sharma's Darshan Series
Sharma, originally from Mumbai and now based in the U.S., reimagines the traditional darshan experience through contemporary photography. She collaborated with Indian artisans to create authentic props and costumes, capturing images that challenge conventional preservation of Hindu deities. The photographs are framed in elaborate brass designs inspired by temple architecture.
