Florida high school principal Scott Hazlett, recently appointed as the leader of Leto High School in Tampa, was detained over the weekend on charges of driving under the influence and possession of cocaine. Authorities stopped Hazlett in the early hours of Saturday morning, approximately 1:40 a.m., while he was speeding near his residence in Temple Terrace. Hazlett, 40 years old, was found to be in possession of cocaine and related paraphernalia at the time of his arrest.
This incident occurs shortly after Hazlett's promotion was announced, with a congratulatory message from Hillsborough County Schools posted on July 8. The district has since placed Hazlett on administrative leave as investigations continue.
Hazlett was released on a $3,500 bond after spending nearly 10 hours in custody. His background includes leading an international school in Vietnam in 2018 before returning to Hillsborough County to serve as an assistant principal in 2019.
