Airtel Uganda Launches Starlink Direct-to-Cell Satellite Service
Airtel Uganda has launched Starlink Direct-to-Cell, becoming the second African market after the Democratic Republic of Congo to introduce the satellite-to-mobile technology. The service initially allows compatible smartphones to use SMS and WhatsApp messaging outside terrestrial mobile-network coverage, without requiring a satellite handset or external antenna. Starlink satellites effectively operate as cell towers in space and connect directly with existing phones using mobile spectrum. The September 25 launch gives Airtel a way to extend basic connectivity into remote communities and locations where conventional tower construction is difficult or uneconomic. It also marks another important commercial step for direct-to-device satellite technology as African operators seek ways to close persistent rural and geographic coverage gaps.
