Rakuten Mobile Scales Open RAN to 152,000 Sites and 330,000 Cells
Rakuten Mobile says its cloud-native Open RAN network has expanded to more than 152,000 sites and over 330,000 cells, providing the software foundation for a wider shift toward AI-native network operations. The Japanese operator has achieved TM Forum Level 4 autonomous-network validation for RAN energy efficiency, allowing software to automatically optimise power consumption with limited human intervention. Rakuten Mobile is also working with Intel to move AI inference directly into the RAN environment and potentially to the cell edge. The strategy demonstrates how Open RAN’s software-defined architecture can extend beyond vendor interoperability toward autonomous optimisation. Rakuten launched its Open RAN architecture in 2019 and is now using that foundation to introduce increasingly sophisticated AI-driven network functions.
