Texas Democratic lawmakers, who temporarily left their state to obstruct a Republican-controlled redistricting plan, are calling on Democratic leaders in other states to reconsider their approach to redistricting. During their stay in Illinois and other northern regions, these legislators emphasized the importance of redrawing electoral boundaries to combat partisan gerrymandering and challenge the traditional party stance favoring neutral maps.
Houston State Rep. Gene Wu, leading the Democratic minority in the Texas House, also dismissed threats from Republican Governor Greg Abbott, who has threatened to remove the lawmakers from office or pursue felony bribery charges in response to their departure to block the new congressional map.
