Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has petitioned the state's Supreme Court to remove Democratic House Minority Leader Gene Wu from office amid ongoing legislative standoff.
Abbott's emergency filing aims to disqualify Wu, who is considered a key figure among Texas Democrats refusing to return to the state to block a Republican-favored congressional redistricting plan. The Democratic lawmakers, including Wu, have traveled to states like Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts, effectively denying the necessary quorum.
In a statement on X, Abbott explained, "Today, I initiated urgent legal proceedings to remove from office those Democrat legislators who are neglecting their duties during the special session."
Wu responded publicly on CNN, challenging Abbott's actions and encouraging resistance. He stated, "Democrats are saying, ‘Come and take it,’ but it's just bravado. There's no real threat here."
Wu was also present with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker at a Sunday press conference, where Pritzker emphasized solidarity and action.
