The late James Gandolfini is famously linked to his iconic role as Tony Soprano in The Sopranos , but he was once on the path to joining The Office until HBO stepped in.
The 1997 series ran for six seasons and cemented itself as one of the greatest and most influential TV series of all time. Gandolfini played the lead role of the New Jersey mafia boss, balancing his criminal life, family, and mental health. The Sopranos ended its run in 2007 and led to the actor to be largely known for his iconic TV role.
Amid his career, Gandolfini tried his hand at other roles away from being known as a mob boss. He appeared in The Taking of Pelham 123, Zero Dark 30 , and received acclaim for starring in the romantic comedy Enough Said. In 2011, Gandolfini was almost given a shot to star in the sitcom The Office.
