That’s why I created Hank’s Rulebook Translation Series.
I’m going to take rules written in technical language and explain what they actually look like when players are moving at full speed. Because reading a rule on paper and applying it during live action are two very different things.
Here’s the brutally honest part: many fans—and even some coaches—don’t know the rule nearly as well as they think they do. They know what they’ve heard from announcers, learned from professional sports, or remember from when they played twenty years ago. Unfortunately, none of those automatically match the rules being used today.
Not all contact is a foul. Something that looks awkward isn’t automatically illegal. And yelling, “That’s the rule!” doesn’t make it the rule.
Officials have to consider timing, positioning, advantage, intent, and what actually happened—not simply how the play looked from the third row.
