Today in History revisits the Friday, Sept. 14, 1979, edition of the Grand Forks Herald and highlights a story of two buses of UND athletic boosters taking a trip to Hoople, North Dakota, known as "Tater Town," as part of the Potato Bowl festivities. Included was a stop in Ardoch at Smokey's Bar, a five-member Ooh-Pa band on the bus and great fun at the Hoople American Legion.

HOOPLE, N.D. — It takes more than a hop to get to Hoople.
It takes lots of laughs, a couple pit stops and a least a few toddies.
Two half-full buses of University of North Dakota athletic boosters went hopping to Hoople Thursday night. The event is held in conjunction with the annual Potato Bowl festivities. And what better place to go than the self-proclaimed “Tater Town.”
“It’s mostly a fun thing,” said one Hoople-hopper. “And it’s a chance for some of the businessmen to meet with potato growers from throughout the valley. The city people and farmers depend a lot on each other and it’s good to get together once in awhile.”
It’s also a chance for UND boosters to do some public relations work. A person never know...
