HERMISTON — The Umatilla County Fire District No. 1 responded to 618 calls across 620 miles during the month of August.

The district averaged 20 calls per day in August.

A total of 485 calls — or 79% — were for emergency medical services. According to the district, the most common responses were for reported illnesses, falls, trouble breathing and chest pain.

During August, the district responded to 50 public service calls including fire alarms, lift assists and calls for a community paramedic. There also 46 non-emergency calls, 29 fires, 21 vehicle crashes, seven responses to hazardous conditions and one rescue response.

Umatilla County Fire District No. 1’s Station 21 in downtown Hermiston and Station 22 on Punkin Center Road are staffed with firefighters, EMTs and paramedics 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

According to the district, a grant from the FEMA SAFER program has strengthened the district’s ability to operate Station 23 on Westland Road, improving response coverage and increasing the number of available emergency response personnel.
