Although the author of Hebrews does not identify himself, the epistle reveals that it was written before the destruction of Temple at Jerusalem in 70 A.D. It exalts the superiority of Christ and his salvation, and exhorts its readers to imitate the steadfastness of Christ.
The author of the book was writing “a word of exhortation” to a congregation composed mainly of Jewish Christians. They had been made “a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions,” and had taken “joyfully the spoiling” of their goods.
