United Way of Jay County leaned into the theme Friday as it returned to its campaign kickoff at Harold E. Schutz Memorial Stadium during halftime of the Jay County High School football team’s game against Lapel.
Jane Ann Runyon, executive director at United Way of Jay County, recalled how the organization touted superhero Captain J — represented by Drew Houck — in past campaigns. Combining Jay County High School’s mascot, the Patriots, along with America’s 250th anniversary for the campaign theme this year seemed fitting, she said.
Houck donned a royal blue tailcoat, white vest, powdered wig and tricorn hat, complete with gold-colored buttons and trim, decorative lace and a white feather. He and other volunteers walked onto the track and launched T-shirts and mini foam footballs into the bleachers.
Donation buckets are now available throughout the community for folks to contribute toward the campaign.
