A stock split boosts the number of shares an investor owns without changing the value of their total position. In other words, the same investment is simply divided into a larger number of smaller pieces.
What makes splits interesting is that the arithmetic is often the least important part. A company whose stock has climbed from $20 to $200 faces a very different set of circumstances from one whose shares have slipped from $20 toward $2. Yet, both can end up changing their share count. The first might divide its shares through a traditional split, while the second could consolidate them through a reverse split.
That means two companies appearing on the same stock-split calendar can be there for almost opposite reasons. One may be adjusting to years of share-price appreciation, while another may be trying to put some distance between its stock and an exchange’s minimum-price threshold.
