The official poster has been released for Upiro, the horror film written by Elena Muñoz and directed by Óscar Martín (Bonsai, Amigo). A Spanish-Belgian co-production, the film draws inspiration from an alleged case of vampirism described as the first documented by the Catholic Church in the Iberian Peninsula, involving events at a convent in Calasparra during the 18th century.
Upiro blends supernatural horror with historical thriller elements, bringing the vampire myth to Enlightenment-era Spain, where religious beliefs clash with the rise of scientific thought.
Following its world premiere at Fantastic Fest, Upiro will screen at the Sitges Film Festival this month before opening in Spanish theaters on February 19, 2027.
Plot: Spain, 1755. A young woman is sent to a cloistered monastery where several novices are suffering from a mysterious blood disease. An unconventional Franciscan friar investigates the disturbing events, but his methods clash with the scientific ideas of the time. The clues point to an ancient presence: a bloodthirsty vampire may have entered the monastery.
The cast includes Diego Anido, Pauline Brisy, Victoria Cerrada, María Galiana, Juanjo Puigcorbé and Javier...
