FLEETWOOD — The future of the Fleetwood Post Office is uncertain after what affected residents described as unclear communication from the United States Postal Service and a local property owner alleging an unfulfilled lease for a new office.
Philip Bogenberger, a North Carolina media contact for the USPS, said that no final decision has been made about the office’s future.
The USPS recently announced a discontinuance feasibility study to determine the Fleetwood Post Office's future.
Although the USPS placed the post office under emergency suspension after Hurricane Helene nearly two years ago, postal authorities said no “suitable alternate quarters” are available for a new location, according to a USPS notice issued to affected customers.
Currently, post office box customers will continue to receive their mail at the Todd Post Office.
“If a decision is ultimately made to permanently close the Fleetwood Post Office, the customer status of those with PO Boxes, as well as other customers, simply changes from temporary to permanent in our system, and customer PO Box numbers and ZIP Codes remain the same,” according to a notice to affected customers.
