Valarie Christine Lesner Jones died peacefully on August 14, 2026, at her home in Atlantic Shores in Virginia Beach, having celebrated her 101st birthday in April earlier this year. Valarie is remembered for her deep love for her extended family, friends, and the community of residents and caregivers in Atlantic Shores. She was the center of gravity of all those in her life.
Valarie was born on April 24, 1925, in the Berkley neighborhood of Norfolk to Valentine and Sadie Lesner. She lived most of her 101 years in the Tidewater area of Virginia. The Lesner Bridge over the Lynnhaven Inlet was named after her uncle, a popular politician in the early 1900s. Sadie and Valentine had four children – Philip, Valarie, Doris, and Janet.
From an early age, Valarie was committed to becoming a nurse, leaving home at the age of 18 to attend the MCV School of Nursing in Richmond. After practicing as a Registered Nurse for two years, she used her nursing degree to become an airline stewardess with Piedmont Airlines, a puddle-jumper with connecting flights throughout the Southeastern US.
