Vinícius Jr has apologised to his teammates and Real Madrid’s supporters after being sent off in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Villarreal, with the Brazilian now waiting on a disciplinary committee ruling that could keep him out of El Clásico at Camp Nou on 25 October, as Reuters reported.
What happened at the Bernabéu
Vinícius came on in the 52nd minute of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Villarreal, where Yan Diomande scored the winner, and thought he had scored Madrid’s second goal. The strike was disallowed after a VAR review showed he had pulled Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba’s hair during the build-up, and referee Isidro Díaz de Mera sent him off 20 minutes after his introduction.
The 26-year-old reacted furiously and had to be held back by his teammates as he left the pitch. After the match he posted on social media: “sorry to the team and the fans.”
What the rules say
Spanish Football Federation regulations class hair-pulling as violent conduct. Outlook India cites Article 103.2 of the disciplinary code, which brings a ban of two to three matches, though the length is set by the referee’s report and the disciplinary committee.
