We, in Fulton County, are fortunate to have in our county a building of important historical value, the Fulton House.
Built in 1793 and added to in 1810, it served as a hotel until 1944 when the west end burned. Demolition was considered, until local businessmen considered it too historic to destroy and had it rebuilt.
The eastern end was saved, although it has a few scars, and that is important because part of the building’s historic value is in those four rooms. They have the original fireplaces, walls and woodwork as they were originally built. In addition, in the basement is a water reservoir used as springhouses were used to keep foods like milk and butter cool. Also, you can see in the front basement walls where the doors that opened on Water Street (Lincoln Way) were located before the street was filled in.
The original Fulton County Historical Society Museum is housed in the Fulton House, although we had to add an annex up the street to house everything. The building is showing wear and tear and needs help. The Historical Society needs people who care and volunteer or even have good ideas on what can be done for the future.
