Our Town Council meeting on Monday, September 14 focused almost exclusively on an update and discussion about the Envision Wakefield Downtown Revitalization effort. The goal of this initiative is to leverage significant state and federal funding from the Massachusetts Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) to enhance Wakefield's downtown corridor, address critical road and pedestrian safety issues, and spur economic development. The concept behind the TIP is that the program will fund all construction work for a project that improves safety conditions if the local community funds the entire design effort. Initiated in 2017 through Town Meeting-approved appropriations, the initiative consists of three separate projects in various phases of planning:
