MOORE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- The sound of cowbells filled the air as dozens of participants gathered at Sandhills Community College for the Walk to End Alzheimer's, raising awareness and support for families impacted by Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
For many walkers, the event was deeply personal.
Mike Rospert walked in honor of his wife, Sue, this year's Blue Flower honoree. Sue was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease four years ago.
"Suzy has been living with the disease for four years," Rospert said. "She understands the disease and she's living with it, and she's doing a wonderful job."
Rospert said the journey has been filled with both heartbreak and resilience as he watches his wife battle the disease.
"It's very difficult," he said. "Suzy and I look for the smiles every day. We always find something good to say. We always kiss each other good night and in the morning. There are difficult times where you want to go out in the garage and scream."
Organizers say the event helps raise awareness and funding for care, support and research efforts.
