The Washington Department of Revenue (DOR) published a special notice announcing the implementation of a new peer-to-peer car-sharing tax. Starting Jan. 1, 2027, a 9.9 percent tax will apply to peer-to-peer car-sharing transactions in Washington state when the vehicle was purchased using a reseller permit or other approved exemption certificate, with the tax being collected by car-sharing platforms at the beginning of the car-sharing period and reported on excise tax returns under the Peer-To-Peer Car-Sharing tax classification.
