M-CHS 1st at Monte Vista, 4th in Montrose
The Panthers saved some of their best for last in the final days of the regular season, with four golfers placing in the top 11 to score their lowest total of the season – 226 – to edge the host Pirates by one stroke Sept. 15.
Juniors Zye Kuenzler and Brooks Story took second and third, respectively, firing some of the best competitive rounds of the season with scores of 71 and 75.
Senior Gavin Gill added a round of 80 in one of his best outings of the year to take eighth, and sophomore Malachi Padilla added an 83.
A day earlier at The Bridges GC in Montrose, the Panthers took fourth as a team behind Kuenzler’s 81, Story’s 84 and junior Rylan Maloney’s 86.
At the conclusion of the weekend, both Kuenzler and Story sit well inside the top 84 individuals in terms of scoring average in the 3A classification, meaning both are in line to qualify for the state championships in Alamosa on Oct. 5 and 6 .

The Panthers (7-2, 1-0 3A IML) tallied their first league win of the season, while also matching their highest win total since 2004 in their road trip to the San Luis Valley.
