The piece was perfect. Engineered, finished, approved, photographed in the shop. Then it reached the arena and stopped four inches wider than the freight elevator.

What happens next is always the same. Someone finds a saw. The build gets cut down by a crew that didn't draw it, and the object that was supposed to define the moment gets pushed to the bottom of the camera roll.

The build matched the drawing. The drawing didn't have the elevator in it, because the elevator was production's problem, and production wasn't in the room when the piece was designed.

The gap was the real perpetrator. The space between two contracts is where most scenic failures actually live, and it plays out differently when the stakes are at their highest.
