ST. LOUIS – The following question was posed to White Sox third baseman Colson Montgomery prior to his team’s 7-3 loss to the Cardinals on Friday night at Busch Stadium, in a game delayed one hour and 10 minutes by rain.
Is there something acceptable regarding just making the playoffs as a Wild Card, or does this team want the American League Central title?
“Yeah, we want to win the division because we feel like we are the best team in the division,” Montgomery said. “That’s what should happen. You feel like you are the best team in your division or things like that, you feel like you should win it.”
If the White Sox (75-72) believe they are the best in the AL Central, then they need to start showing it soon. Their fourth straight loss – marking just the second time this season they have lost as many as four in a row – coupled with Cleveland’s 5-2 victory in Minnesota, dropped the division advantage to just half a game. The two teams battle for the final three games of the 2026 season series from Monday-Wednesday at Progressive field.
