IonQ (IONQ) stock surged more than 12% in Tuesday’s after-hours trading after the company announced a breakthrough in quantum error correction. IonQ said it developed the industry’s first end-to-end real-time quantum error correction decoder that runs on a single standard CPU.
The company said the decoder can correct errors across millions of quantum operations without slowing the system. The news came on the heels of IonQ’s multi-year partnership with South Korean quantum technology company SDT, announced earlier Tuesday.
IonQ tested the decoder on circuits simulating up to 408 logical qubits. The tests covered 88 memory blocks and magic factories. The circuits completed more than 31.5 million quantum operations.
Under standard operating noise, the decoder added just 0.02% stretch time. This means it added very little delay to the quantum process.
“Successfully validating real-time decoding across hundreds of logical qubits and over millions of logical operations is an important milestone,” said Nicolas Delfosse, a paper co-author and quantum research lead at IonQ.
