MADISON — The Wisconsin Department of Health Services updated the state’s measles case count Friday, reporting confirmed cases in six counties since August.
According to DHS, confirmed cases have been identified in Chippewa, Grant, Iowa, Lafayette, Marathon and Vernon counties. Updated case counts are available on the agency’s online measles dashboard.
Health officials say measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area.
DHS warns measles can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, brain damage and deafness, and in some cases can be fatal.
The agency is encouraging Wisconsin residents to watch for measles symptoms and contact a health care provider if symptoms develop, even without a known exposure. Symptoms typically appear 10 to 21 days after exposure to the virus.
DHS said it will issue additional updates if confirmed cases are reported in more counties or if case counts increase significantly. Residents can monitor the state’s measles dashboard and outbreak information webpage for the latest updates.
