ALCONA COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) - A woman and her two children had to be rescued after their boat ran aground on Lake Huron.
The incident happened on Wednesday after a mile offshore near Black River Island in Alcona Township.
When deputies arrived, they found a 38-foot Chris-Craft vessel stuck in zero to two feet of water with three passengers on board. The three were a 40-year-old woman, along with her 11-year-old son and nine-year-old daughter, all from Dayton, Ohio.
The woman said she recently purchased the boat and was traveling with her children to Chicago.
First responders rescued the family without further incident. No injuries were reported.
The woman will be responsible for the cost of removing the vessel, which remains grounded.
"It is fortunate that this incident occurred during relatively good weather conditions," said Alcona County Sheriff Scott Stephenson. "Had the weather been poor, there could have been a different outcome. The Great Lakes are very unpredictable in the fall, and conditions can change quickly. Poor judgment can often be deadly."
